Shaping America Politically and Culturally

The Irish hated the British, and as the Irish population in the United States grew to nearly two million, the politicians found it politically beneficial to insult and ridicule England. The Germans came to America because the land was one of the brightest hopes for democracy. With their ideas about slavery and public corruption, German liberals played an important role to the strengthening in the American political life. Both the Irish and the Germans were influential voters, and the American politicians took advantage of this fact. The Germans were not as influential as the Irish were, because the Germans" strength was more widely scattered.
The Irish and Germans affected the United States economically and socially as well. The Irish came to America because of the potato famine in Ireland that was occurring in Ireland during this time period. The group came to America poor and thus was unable to move west to buy land, equipment and livestock. They were forced to live in poverty, and once there they worsened the already poor slum conditions. The Irish and blacks fiercely hated one another due to the fact that they were competitors for the same jobs. Both competed for low-income jobs. However, in some cases, the Irish began to gain control of city machines, and before long Irishmen dominated police departments in a large number of the larger cities. The Irishmen changed the American economy because they now worked on the southern plantations causing the owners to be less reliant on slaves. This aided the southern economy later on when slave trade illegal became illegal. The southern plantation owners had already become less dependent on their slaves, and now they had cheap Irish labor with little need for slaves. .
The Germans helped shape the education system when they immigrated to America from Germany. The Germans were better educated than the previous immigrants were. The Germans supported public schooling and brought with them the idea of the kindergarten.
