The significant role that the Prime Minister performs is, without doubt, what holds a country that has, especially, experienced a great Depression and war simultaneously. I, Alexander McFerren, am 47 years old farmer living in Regina. I strongly believe that the approach you, Mackenzie King, took throughout the Depression was, certainly, much more effective than that taken by Richard Bedford Bennett. I also consider and respect the way you dealt with the issue of conscription during World War II. Last but definitely not least, the proceedings that you performed to help with the war effort were remarkable. Hence, I will vote for you and the Liberals in the upcoming election. .
During the great depression, the actions and approaches that you undertook were, undoubtedly, much more successful than Bennett's. When Bennett came into power in 1930, he promised that he will boost Canadian manufacturing and provide Canadian business with better trading opportunities. However, his policies did little to ease the economic crisis. None of his acts had any great impact on the Depression, and were only first-aid treatments. Unfortunately, government laid off city workers, raised taxes, cut expenses and borrowed money. It was extremely difficult for me to make a living. I was selling wheat for 40 cents a bushel or often burning it because it was not worth shipping. How, may I ask, did Bennett's promise of "blasting our way" into world markets was achieved? In contrast to Bennett, when you detained the position again in 1935, you implemented numerous effective relief programs such as the Natural Employment and the National Housing Act. Indeed, Bennett's failure affected Canada whereas your success reflected Canada's boost.
Your significant achievements were not just brought to an end at the closing stages of the Depression; however, persisted during the war by the approach you carried out while seeking to prevent conscription.
