I think that being a child psychologist would be a very interesting job because while evaluating children with psychological disorders, you pretty much get paid to tell people your opinions about the kid. Plus, since there are such a wide variety of areas you could work as a psychologist, if you get bored with one, just move on to another. .
When you think of a Child psychologist, most likely you are thinking of a kid talking to a therapist to see if they are crazy or not. Ok so maybe you aren't thinking that at all but that is kind of what I got out if it, but Child psychologist's are so much more then that! They conduct scientific research and provide psychological services to infants all the way to adolescents. It focuses on understanding, preventing, diagnosing and treating children's psychological, cognitive, emotional, developmental, behavioral and family problems. .
To be a Child psychologist you need to be an emotionally stable person. Obviously if you are working with an emotionally disabled child, being emotionally unstable yourself isn't going to reflect positively on the child's development. You need to also be mature and able to deal effectively with children. It goes unsaid that to be a Child psychologist you need to have some type of liking or interest with children, which follows with patience. Since a Child can be so disturbed or psychologically challenged, this line of work will come with stress and need complete dedication. But I think the biggest characteristic is that you need to have compassion. Even if it is difficult, you need to understand the child and what he or she is going threw, and respond to them in a comforting way.
Since there are a variety of areas you could specialize in, there is a variety of places of employment. From private practice to child care clinics, schools to hospitals, all Child psychologists are aiming at doing one thing, which is helping children.
