Abnormal Psychology

Carol displayed symptoms of schizophrenia through both of her meeting sessions with Dr. It was obvious that by no means is Carol experiencing the Residual Phase of her disorder. Her actions, thoughts, and speech mainly display characteristics of positive and disorganized symptoms of schizophrenia. She talks of many hallucinations and delusions that she claims to experience frequently. Her Hallucinations, like most individuals suffering with this disorder are auditory. Carol complains of echoing voices whose tones appear to be demanding, controlling and un-stoppable. The voices, cannot be controlled and push Carol to do things she otherwise would not. These voices are so real to her that they actually influence her answers on her exams. Carol believes that these voices are real and she will answers test questions according to what they have to say ultimately failing the test. She also experiences other hallucinations such as hearing her heart beat as a dog's bark and hearing loud noises such as a helicopter penetrating through the walls. Carol knows that she is experiencing these chaotic and bizarre hallucinations. I do not believe that she thinks that she is hallucinating but I it obvious that she is aware that the voices and noises are distracting and impair her ability to function normally in school, which is very important to her. Carol also experiences Delusions, or misinterpretations of reality. This seems to occur when her thought patterns and speech are disrupted, which is a disorganized symptom. When she talks to the doctor about her old apartment Carol blatantly talks of an experience she had that altered her reality. "When I got up to Megan's old room I saw the ceiling bulging downward. The bulging was a sign that the other worlds are impinging on this world, right? Pretty soon it will all come crashing in." Carol said. This is not only a demonstration that her reality was altered, but a sign that Carol might feel threatened by things and that things are trying to harm her in some way.
