The Impossible Utopia of Omelas

To exchange all the goodness and grace of every life in Omelas for that single, small improvement: to throw away the happiness of thousands for the chance of the happiness of one." .
Every citizen knows that the child is there. Every young person that resides in Omelas has to go view the child in the closet when they are between the ages of eight and twelve. Some kids are scared, afraid, or horrified by the child when they see it. Eventually though, the feelings wear off and they realize why the child is there and why it has to live in such a condition. To live in Omelas, you have to understand that the child is there for the greater good of everyone. They know what kind of life it has to live and how horrible it must be to be that child. But, they choose to contribute to the suffering so that they can live in their own little world, full of happiness and glory. .
There are a few people that decide to go against the flow of Omelas. After seeing the child in all of its misery, they simply walk away from Omelas and never look back. They walk away from everything they have ever known into the great unknown. It could be terrifying. It could be dreadful. They do not know. All they know is that it is different and that they can live in a society where there doesn't have to be one single child that takes all the hurt and pain for every one else. I would have to be one of those who walk away from Omelas. .
I would find it impossible to live in a city where the citizens base their happiness on one person's suffering. Even though Omelas is a made-up place, compare it to the actual world. Everybody has their own bad days. Everybody has their own good days. The bad days are handed out every so often, as are the good days, therefore making it more of a fair system of life. It would not be fair for one person to have to deal with every other person's imperfections and impurities. This is how I view the system anyways.
