Everyone deals with family problems at least every now and then. Some can be horrific and some can be small. In the movie, Save the Last Dance, Sara (Julia Stiles) loses her mother in an automobile accident. Sara blames herself for her mom's death because her mom was on her way to see one of Sara's dance performances. She moves to live with her dad in Chicago. Her dad seems to be always working and never around. Sara and her dad don't get along till later in the movie when he presents Sara with her mother's dancing shoes. They sit and talk about Sara's mom while getting to know each other better.
Racism is a major issue in some cities still to this day. Save the Last Dance addresses this issue by putting Sara in a school predominately black. Therefore, white people are looked down upon. Sara meets Chenille, black girl her age and Chenille befriends her which causes issues with some of the black girls at school. They like Chenille is wrong for being friends with a white girl. Then Sara meets Chenille's brother Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas). After spending time together, they both began to fall in love. There is a scene on a bus in the movie where Sara and Derek are together and a white elderly woman makes it quite obvious she disapproves of them. They still stay together even though the world is looking down on them. In the movie, they defy what people think is right and wrong.
Most people like movies that end on a positive note and that is what Save the Last Dance does. During this whole movie, Sara is trying to reach her goal.
