Not to be by the book or anything, but if the so-called "true Americans" of this country really take the Constitution word for word, how could they possibly endorse or support censorship on TV or the radio? Explaining the 1st Amendment would just tell these people what they already know, but when it comes to something that they don't approve of, or agree with, they get to play Thomas Jefferson and switch the rules according to how they see fit. Censors, those people who decide what you get to be exposed to, are subconsciously sabotaging the 1st Amendment and, well, us! Censorship is how these censors control what we are exposed to, taking matters into their own hands to make sure we are safe from explicit "stuff." Censors can be politicians, angry mothers, or God fanatics who think they know what is right and wrong for us to see or hear. The land of the free? This can't be happening.
Sure, many things in this world can be a little upsetting to some and for all purposes should best be kept in the dark, but what may seem wrong for one can seem good for another. Guns, sex, drugs, and bad words might be upsetting for someone to absorb, but some people love that kind of stuff and might want to see, hear, or be involved with it. Every good and bad thing on this earth can be seen or heard about, and there is nothing anybody can do about it, and why should they? Nothing is going to change the world, except a meteor or something, but even the censors can't block that out. All in all, everything is here, in our homes, on the street, and in our heads. .
Child safety, of course, isn't this one of the main reasons for censorship? Some parents do not want their kids watching something like HBO's "Hookers on the Point", and that is perfectly understandable. Nobody has any business telling someone else how to raise their kids. If someone does not want their kids watching that, then simply tell the kids not to watch it, but then comes the famous parental argument, "what if my kids just happen to turn on a bad TV program without my consent?" The truth is, if they do, its because they wanted to.
