On October 7, 1998, Matthew Sheppard was also a victim of a yet another hate crime. This time it had no reason of race but of all common "hate". Matthew was open with his identity of being gay and because of it he had to so call pay. Matthew was kidnapped and beaten with a butt of a pistol and terrorized until he was begging for his life and then died. That is not the least or most of it, these were college-aged kids and they tried to make it like a burglary.
How sickening is that? The person that you may sit next to in class could be that kind of a person. Possibly 2 out of 3 people you see walking have some kind of prejudices inside them that involves hate crimes or in some kind of a group. Mathew's personal story made even Congressman Nancy Pelosi comment on October 18, 1999 on how much we need the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. There are not just murders of gays and lesbians, there are harassments, which cause them to be isolated and not to be comfortable and to fear the outside world which our nation does or should not stand for. These crimes are not decreasing, they are increasing.
Hate crimes are just not about or against African Americans or homosexuals. They are against different ethnic groups as well. A Jewish community was even shot at by a white supremacist in Los Angeles and there were children involved. They try to say that white supremacists groups are not involved! Sure and Bill Clinton did not have sexual contact with Monica Lewinsky.
The shooting took place at the North Valley Jewish Community Center. Five people were shot and that was counting three small boys. A 5-year-old child was in critical condition. Of course this particular crime would be against a Jewish community because the fact that the leaders of these groups are always talking about their God and so for Christ to return, the world must be cleansed of satanic forces meaning Jews, homosexuals, other than whites etc.
