Has there been a rise of racism in contemporary Europe? How

In the sixties no records of racist violence was recorded. People would not go to the police with problems regarding racism so police now have made themselves easier to be approachable, therefore there has been under reporting of criminal behavior. It is also true to say that some elements of racism have got worse and others got better. Overt racism has demolished but people's beliefs towards this may be worsening e.g. towards asylum seekers. In August 2000an article entitled "Europe fears spread of racism" was published by BBC News. It was based on evidence taken from the German police force in Germany. It was shown by the figures that racist crimes, including attacks on foreigners in Germany, had increased over more than fifty percent from ten thousand in 1999, to sixteen thousand in 2000 (www.bbc.co.uk/news) An increase of racist related rimes has also been seen in other countries, particular highly Sweden. .
In contemporary Europe there has clearly been a rise of racism. Harles Westin strongly emphasized this point in December 1997 at the Ceifo Conference for Racism. " A large number of acts of brutal violence- arson, beatings and bashing, murders taking place in Europe in the 1990's have shocked the world. Acts of racist terrorism have been committed in Sweden and Germany, signifying the return of ideas and ideals that most of us had come had come to believe were buried in the ruins of the Third Reich". (www.ceifo.su.se).
Another factor that has led instantly to a growth of racism in Europe is migration and immigration. The term "new migration" is now used by most sociologists. It was since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, when this method of migration had occurred. The opening of borders between the east and west has led to an influx of five million immigrants. (Sociology 4th Edition. Anthony Giddens. 2001) In 1998 the war in Yugoslavia also resulted in five million immigrants moving elsewhere for refuge.
