Child Labor


             In the early 1800s the employment of children, even eight-year-olds, in the cotton mills was accepted as a matter of course. It was regarded as a practice of public benefit. Later in the century, however, some people began to see the employment of children as an evil thing. During the progressive era, journalists and social workers documented the conditions in which children worked and the effects which work had on their health and futures. Reformers began to lobby for legislation restricting child labor.
             Although forms of child labor are still in affect today, the worst of It id in the past. Commonly defined as work performed by children endangering their health and safety, interfering with their education, or keeping them from activities that are important for their childhood development period.
             Factories and technological industries hired children due to their small size. Say as if a machine brook, a child could easily fit in and fix the problem because of the size of their hand. Because of these conditions, children would higher their chances of getting injured and losing a part of their body. This was a very unsafe condition to live with. So to help out, in 1904, a group a middle class reformers organized together to form a National child labor committee to help promote the interest of children and to also strengthen workers" education.
             Now days in the 21 century minors under the age of fourteen can get a job as newspaper carriers, caddies, domestic service workers, entertainers, and farmers. If they are under twelve years of age, they can work at a parent owned farm. All workers under the age of eighteen needs to have a work permit to have a job. They have a limited number of work hours for a certain age.
             As can be seen now in the u.s. the child labor laws are taken into effect all around. Some countries may not even abide by these child labor laws, but the u.s. must take into effect with this child labor amendment.
