Have you ever lost a family member or friend that was innocent in the crime they had been killed in? The death penalty has been used for over 500 years. Some of the ways to be punished would be gas chamber, burned at the stake, hanging, firing squad, electric chair, and many other ways. Although the death penalty brings fear to commit the crime, an eye for an eye, and supposedly cheaper ways to die, but it is also immoral, less economical, and can result in fatal accidents.
The death penalty is immoral because of many reasons. One of them is why should people be able to play God and choose who lives and who dies. No one has the right to choose if someone lives or dies. In the Bible, in the Book of Matthew: 5:38-40, Jesus proclaims, "But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other as well. If someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, give him your cloak as well." This verse really is saying that people should turn the other way and not take things into their own hands. No one should be sent to death by a jury or judge that does not know one thing about the person except for the crime that was committed. People say that time can also be saved, along with money if we use the death penalty. They are wrong with that statement as well.
A second reason why the death penalty should be eliminated from the justice system is the cost of carrying out the sentence. Various state governments estimate that a death penalty case can cost between $1 to $7 million dollars, compared to a trial and conviction of life imprisonment that would cost no more than $500,000. That also would also include the expenses for incarceration for 40 years. The reason for the death penalty costing so much is the appeals that they must go through and also being locked up in death row until the sentence is carried out. A study done by the Sacramento Bee said that the state of California would save $90 million dollars each year if they abolished the death penalty.
