Book to Film

When a novel is very successful, a director usually wants to turn it into a film. Some of these transfers include Deadly Unna, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harry Potter and Looking for Alibrandi. When these transfers are made the director feels it is necessary to leave out scenes or change the dialogue, which will make the story small enough to make into a film. .
When the director cuts scenes and changes the script it's done in a way to make sure the audience gets to see their favourite bits in the book and still show the important parts that form the story. Sometimes directors feel that it is necessary to change the events or details about the characters to make the film better. An example is the film Australian Rules that was based on the book Deadly Unna. In the book the main character Blacky, and his best mate Dumby Red, who had long hair, were both 14. In the film they are 17 and Dumby Red has got a shaved head. It's changes like these that make you think when you watch the film, "Hey wait a minute I thought- These feelings often end in disappointment. I would think that the director would know that the reason the book became so successful was because the people enjoyed it how it was. Making changes to something that became successful in its first form sounds pretty stupid to me.
After reading the book then viewing the film of To Kill a Mockingbird I saw that the director could change a great book into a poor film by excluding a lot of the story. Once I had read the book I was fairly excited to watch the film because I had enjoyed it quite a lot. I was expecting it to be good because I thought that all of the scenes would be covered in some way or another. Boy was I wrong. The film had left out about a half of its scenes, excluded main characters, changed events that were already good in the first place and had very bad acting! Some of the changes were; The exclusion of characters such as Aunt Alexandra, Uncle Jack, Mr Underwood, Scouts teacher Miss Caroline and Little Chuck Little.
