Analysis Essay Religion

After years of wondering what and if there was a God I decided unquestionably there was. However, I was struck with a question almost as profound and frustrating as the one before, "What is God, and what does he want me to do?" There are multitudes of religions in the world, and choosing the correct one is becoming one of the hardest things I believe I will ever have to do. "The Truth in all Religions" helps me understand that it is not just that one religion that matters, but that you follow the good that is in all religions.
Currently, the four largest religions are Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. It first struck me that three of these four all had a single person or prophet that "began" the movement which has lead them to their stature today. Christianity - Jesus, Islam - Mohammed, Buddhism - Buddha. It is even stranger that their beginnings were within four to five centuries from each other. Two millennia have passed and they are still the predominant faiths in the world. And of those three, two were in the same location, Israel/Palestine. Why then, if their teachings are so similar and so closely linked in region, is there such separation between the two?.
"The Truth in all Religions" asks why we define ourselves with labels? Such as Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Jew, or Hindu. If we all share a belief in a compassionate deity, why do we have so much hatred for those who don't follow the same religious tradition, or cultural taboos. He states the question very simply, but the answer "If we want others to know what we are, show them through action.", to me seemed misguided and almost childish. I believe what one believes and worships is his own, and should be shared with him/herself and God alone. .
Each of these major religions all have some kind of sacred text. Each of these texts have written on them the word of a prophet or the word of God himself. I believe that many people try to take sample passages from these texts to try to show the text as a whole.
