In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch runs a race. Atticus is the main character in To Kill A Mockingbird. He is the father of Jem (Jeremy) and Scout (Jeanne Louise), and a role model for Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus runs the race of persistence and perseverance when he is defending Tom Robinson in an innocent case of rape. The outcome of the race that Atticus runs is that Tom Robinson is found guilty. .
Atticus faces many obstacles throughout his life but most of them occur when he represents Tom Robinson. Some obstacles that Atticus faces as he tries to represent Tom is when the community criticizes him. When lots of men come from Meridian to try and hurt Tom but Atticus told them he was asleep and they better not wake him up, and another major obstacle that Atticus fights through is when Bob Ewell threatens by spitting on him and telling Atticus he would get him if it took the rest of his life. Atticus responded saying, "I wish Bob Ewell wouldn't chew tobacco.".
Atticus fights hard through all of the obstacles that he faces, even if it takes lots of perseverance. In the courtroom he keeps trying to give evidence that Tom Robinson is innocent and that it is Bob Ewell who beats up Mayella. Mr. Finch was very unsuccessful in this case because the jury found Mr. Tom Robinson guilty. When talking to the jury Atticus tries to convince them of his innocence but since Tom is black and supposedly less then they are they find him guilty, and Mayella Ewell innocent.
Mr. Finch learns that you can't always influence everybody and persuade everyone to change his or her minds, but if you use perseverance and a little persistence you will definitely have an impact on at least one person. He did affect one person, Mr. Cunningham. He was the last man to change his mind about finding Tom guilty. Atticus learns that life's not fair and things don't always turn out the way you want them to. .
Atticus faces many obstacles, through which all of them he perseveres.
