Dolphus Raymond


             Dolphus Raymond is secretive man who separates himself from the Maycomb society and the white community as well. Dolphus marries a black woman and is criticized by the rest of Maycomb County. He puts on a show of being drunk majority of time by carrying a Pepsi bottle with "alcohol" inside; to give the county something to make up for the fact that he is with a black woman. Dolphus also has several kids with the woman but they kids are also criticize because they are different than everyone else. .
             During the case of Tom Robinson, Dolphus sits with the colored people instead of the whites because he feels more comfortable with them. When Dill left the courtroom, Dolphus left with him and the children to tell Dill not to cry. When outside of the courtroom, Dill tasted Raymond's "alcohol" and Dill found out that Dolphus isn't really an alcoholic, he just drinks Coca-cola all day. At this time in the story Mr. Raymond explains to children about his situation by stating, "Some folks don't-like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with "em, I don't care if they don't like it. I do say I don't care if they don't like it, right enough-but I don't say the with "em, see?" .
             Many people in Maycomb County do not associate with Dolphus because he is a drunk and is with a black woman. Scout, Jem, and Dill talks to him for the first time during the court case and finds out that he is a normal guy that just fell in love with a black woman. Dolphus really never gets into another character's skin, but instead, the children see through his perspective of why he pretends to be drunk in order to be with the black woman and to be happy with her. .
             Dolphus has a particular attitude that is different than others from Maycomb County. He doesn't care about what society feels about him, and he only cares about what makes him happy. Dolphus also had the mindset of a person from the 21st century; he didn't' care about race, class, or what society thinks he should be.
