Mcteague intro

In order to try something different, I did some research on Frank Norris and tried to figure out what some elements of McTeague might be before I started reading. I have noticed in our readings so far that the background of the author plays a large part in what the piece is about. A good example of this is anything composed by Emily Dickenson. Anyhow, Frank Norris was born in 1870 in Chicago but moved to San Francisco early in his childhood and lived there until he moved to Paris to study art. He then returned to California and attended the University of California in 1890. He began writing McTeague at this point. In 1895 he left California to attend Harvard. He continued to write. He dedicated the book to Lewis E. Gates, his mentor/instructor while at Harvard. Norris is known for touting McTeague as an example of "American naturalism." Norris picks to write about the typical American, not particularly low class, but not exactly upper echelon of society. How ironic! Norris is seemingly writing about something he should know nothing about.
What is obvious in the story is that McTeague apparently is a dentist, or at least he does dental work. He has "a thing" for his friend's cousin, Trina. McTeague may not be the most intelligent man, but he does not seem to be completely clueless, and does not intend to cause harm. Is this inline with what should be expected from Norris" work? Maybe. It is important to remember how young he was when he wrote this novel. Having apparently grown up privileged, he may have been very curious and amused by how the lower classes lived. McTeague is somewhat typical low class in that he has a fancy for tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Is this how Norris saw lower class people, as indulgent, lazy idiots? I will have to reserve that judgment after I have read more of his work. .
