A question comes to your mind when you watch Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and when you read Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? What does it mean to be a human? When reviewing both the novel and the movie, you realize that although both convey the same idea, they go about describing it in different ways. In the story, a cop, or blade runner, tracks down and "retires- androids who escaped from an off-world colony and returned to earth. .
Although the novel and the movie have the same plot and many similarities, you notice the differences as well. In the movie Blade Runner Deckard does not have a wife, unlike the novel where he does have a wife named "Iran- (3). In the novel Rachel Rosen, a potential android, seduces Deckard, showing the similarities between humans and androids. Rachel, a Nexus 6, can act and operate as a normal human. Rachel's human qualities produce a fazade that makes her seem like a real human. Rachel's uncanny ability to act like a human makes you wonder whether or not Deckard received false memories, masking his real android identity like Rachel. Ridley Scott's portrayal of Rachel also differed greatly from Philip K. Dick's depiction. While, in the novel, Rachel sleeps with Deckard in a manipulative attempt to slow down his search for the androids, the Rachel depicted in the film has an honest loyalty towards Deckard. Rachel finds Deckard after escaping from the Tyrell Corporation and even saves his life when another android tries to kill him. Deckard's relationship with Rachel allows him to see the truth behind the androids. She allows for Deckard to realize that even without empathy, they still have emotions and they do feel pain. Towards the end of the film, Deckard realizes that he cannot consider androids as objects. In the film, Roy Baty's character also portrays another side to the androids and makes Deckard realize the pain these androids go through.
