I believe that corporal punishment in children should be outlawed. There should be some other way to get a child's attention or obedience. Corporal punishment can get instantaneous actions but can also be harmful and dangerous. Here are a few things about corporal punishment.
In one article I read, a major study had been conducted. In the results it stated that while it can force a child to obey quickly, it can also cause long-term damages, such as aggression, anti-social behavior, and mental health problems. When the study was conducted, the only one positive result of spanking, was instant obedience.
In the second account I read, it stated "Spare the Rod to Spare the Child." Once again, it said that in a 62 year analysis, the study found no link between physical discipline and 11 negative behaviors, including increased aggression, and delinquent behavior. A scientist named Elizabeth Gershoff Ph.D., said that 25% of parents use an object with which to spank their child. .
In the third article I read, it talked about how one researcher studied children into their twenties and concluded that spanking,(spanking being defined as an openhanded slap to the backside or to the arm or legs), will not scar a child for life. However, she still opposes spanking and other forms of corporal punishment. There is a major distinction between the minor punishments practiced by most parents who spank and the harsher punishments practiced by parents who take the punishment a bit too far, for example shaking and blows to the head or face.
My theory of the matter is this: Corporal Punishment should be banned. There have been many studies conducted, as you can see in this paper, that state that spanking can cause harmful and long-term damage. I can see the view points of some parents, but there definitely has to be another way to discipline their child.
