             Cesar's family was going through a very tough time. They could not afford the taxes. Cesar's father would ask for loans and when the taxes were due the Chavez's bill was over 4,000 dollars. Fourtunately Cesar's dad found a way, he would rent out the pool house and gas station. Wich Cesar's family did not own anymore.
             While Cesar would lay down on his bed he would hear his parents and relatives talk about the poverty in Mexico. Cesar would learn how cruelly the landowners would treat the workers. Cesar soon believed that it was very honorable for someones rights. From this, Cesar was ready to become a leader.
             Cesar's family's grace payment was running out, the state took over the farm. Soon the Chavez family would have to leave. In 1938 the Chavez family moved to California to look for work. After the Chavezes stayed for about a year they went back, to try to regain their land in Gilla Valley. But when they finally got there they had found out that the land was already auctioned off to a wealthy landowner. Cesar's fathere did not have enough money to buy back the land. The Gilla Valley farm was demolished.
             Cesar's family migrated back to California. Like many others they were lured to California by the rumors that said they would earn lots and lots of money, but they were lies. The Chaves also dreamed of buying back their land in Gilla Valley. But those dreams would soon be shattered. In California Cesar's family was payed very low wages. At California Cesar's family setteled in Atascadero. By the time the family had reached the feild the harvesting was over.
             The Chavez family decided to go to San Jose, their they picked cherries. They were also payed a very low wage. They lived in shacks or tents. Cesar recalls in the winter, since there was no work it was very hard. Fortunately, one lady let the family stay in her backyard in a tent. Since the tent was small Cesar and his brothers slept outside.
