- Chemistry Laboratory -.
Purpose: To produce hydrogen gas and test for its presence.
Apparatus: zinc, hydrochloric acid, stand, balance, one large and one small test tube,.
Test tube holder, flame stick, safety equipment.
Procedure: A demonstration of this laboratory activity will be performed for the students. Strict attention to the demonstration is necessary to assure that the proper steps are taken. WARNING, this activity involves the use of acid and the production of hydrogen gas. Both of these substances are dangerous and every caution is to be taken to avoid accidents. Any accidents are to be reported immediatly.
Set up the apparatus as follows: The larger test tube is to be attatched to the stand using the test tube clamp. The test tube is to be slightly angled from vertical. The Test tube holder is to be attached to the lower portion of the smaller test tube, inverted and inserted, in the larger test tube.
Obtain a piece of zinc and measure its mass using the balance. Record the mass below. Once these actions are completed, a small amount of acid is to be poured into the larger test tube. The Zinc is then to be placed in the acid, and the smaller test tube placed in the larger test tube. After a few moments, remove the smaller test tube. A mild reaction between the hydrogen gas and the flame will result. The experiment will be repeatable for the next few minutes. However, after each test clear the residue and air in the small test tube.
Objective: Mass Of Zinc .8 grams.
Observations: After i had all of the materials ready, i lit the flame stick and put it in the large test tube and made a pop sound. I put the smaller test tube back inside of it for about ten seconds and repeated it again. I repeated the procedure atleast five times and it still made the popping sound as loud as the other times.
