Genetically Modified Foods

The company that makes Golden Rice has donated some grains to poor farmers in India, where genetically modified foods have not been met with kindness. While Golden Rice has the potential to help millions of children, opponents argue that the current testing standards fail to take into account the potential of damage that could be done to nature and to the human body (www.rockfound.org).
The debate on genetically modified foods goes further than just if it's harmful or not, companies are directly affected by the controversy. For years people have been buying food that has been modified in some way and not knowing it. With the current altercation going on people have demanded to know what has done to their food before they eat it. People have been refusing to buy "Frankenfoods" from supermarket shelves without proper warning. This could cost supermarkets and manufactures of foods millions of dollars making new labels, recalling foods without them, and researching what exactly has been done to every ingredient in the foods a company sells (Ghargaua, PM).
And so, the debate on genetically modified foods is at a standstill with each side saying why is better than the other. The prolific argument of people for genetically modified foods say that it can quickly improve crop charistics such as yield, pest resistance and that for genetically modified foods food will improve the health of human beings. On the contrary to that, opponents for genetically modified foods food say that it raises the possibility of health, environmental and economic problems. .
I will later be addressing the issue myself and say why people will prosper more with genetically modified foods intact but first I wish to look at the bill which plans on eradicating GM foods totally. HR-16 states that its purpose is "To amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to ban the production, distribution and sale of genetically modified foods.
