Condoms in Schools

A long line of students nervously awaits getting their hands on what was unattainable before. Anxious looks come over their faces, covering the look of embarrassment. Students wait in vain to pick up their. condoms. This scenario has not become reality quite yet, but it may if school districts decide to distribute condoms on school grounds. Some say that it is best to provide students with some sort of protection beyond sex education. The truth of the matter is that students need to be held responsible for their actions. .
Students are in constant revolt, asking for equal treatment and demanding respect as responsible human beings. If they are so responsible, why should the school provide them with condoms? If students choose to become sexually active-if they believe they are mature and responsible enough-then they should be responsible enough to bring protection along with them. In New York, at Murrow High School, the distribution of condoms began in 1991. The L.A. Times reported that many students take advantage of the convenience of condoms, but other students realize that it promotes adolescent promiscuity. Teen pregnancy was not reported to be increasing, but the sexual awareness was enhanced through the distribution process. .
Distributing condoms is a trivial idea presented to teens who are still too immature to handle one great responsibility. No one is nave to the fact that sex is glamorized and plastered everywhere - on TV, on the radio and in magazines. So why should we infect our schools with the same temptation? Bottom line: by making condoms easily accessible to teens, they will assume that this is an invitation to become more sexually active. Is it not hypocritical of the school to tell students to abstain from sex - for abstinence is the safest way to prevent pregnancy and infection from STD's - yet distribute condoms causing teens to believe they are giving their consent? Teenagers who practice unsafe sex are already aware of the existence of condoms and make a conscious decision not to use them.
