             Resisting the tide of technological change is impossible. Of course it is possible to do business without a website or email or mobile phone or a fax machine. People have been doing business well before any of these gadgets were invented. But business today is about competition, and technology is about leverage. Technology can lead to alienation if it is not widely dispersed in society. The Industrial age saw the concentration of technology in the hands of the rich and powerful, allowing them to dominate and subdue the population into harsh working conditions. .
             The internet is a social leveler and a field of opportunity. It provides invaluable knowledge and access to resources that would otherwise not have been attainable. Computers and software have challenged the status quo. Computers and software have been widely dispersed throughout society and the cost of software is shared by the community through licensing We often take for granted, the advances in software technology that have allowed home offices and home based businesses to flourish. This has been possible because the cost of developing software technology can be shared through licensing. If software was custom made and the cost to the consumer was charged by the hour, then no one but for the very rich would be able to afford it. It is very easy to take for granted leverage that technology like computers and software has provided, and the return on investment that they bring. We have become accustomed to technology becoming cheaper and better at such a rapid pace, but in the history of technological advance it is unusual that such powerful tools are so readily available to the population at large. .
             This being said, the knowledge to use technology effectively is not widely dispersed and many small to medium sized businesses still struggle, using their computers for basic data entry and dial up internet.
