The land has been conquered and reconquered over the last hundreds of years. From 961-922 BC King Solomon ruled the land and constructed the Temple in Jerusalem. Solomon's reign was followed by the division of land into two kingdoms. Then, in 586 BC, the southern kingdom, Judah, was conquered by the Babylonians, who drove its people, the Jews, into exile and destroyed Solomon's Temple. After 70 years, the Jews began to return and Jerusalem and the temple were gradually rebuilt. During what's now known as the Classical period, from about 333 BC until about 638 AD the Romans controlled the area, persecuted the Jews who were allowed to return and after a few failed revolts by the .
