There are many powerful aspects and themes that are visible in the play Henry V, but none as predominant as the purpose of motivation and inspiration for people in a war of any age. There are many methods that are used to motivate people and Shakespeare has used these in the play. There is motivational leadership, demonstrated by Henry V and many speeches that are produced by the main characters, prominently Henry V. .
First we will look at what motivational leadership, which as previously stated, was demonstrated by Henry V, and secondly, quotes from inspirational speeches will be analysed.
William Shakespeare (1564 -1616) knew a thing or two about the human condition. He certainly knew something about leadership. Dotted through his plays there are many examples of leadership, good and bad. Many people have used the St Crispin's Day speech from Henry V as an example of good, motivational leadership.
So what's so good about it? Let's set the context: Henry's small army is in France. Henry is claiming rights to certain titles and land in France and the French are disputing his claims. Henry's army has fought a few battles with some notable successes. A large French force is now facing them; the cream of French chivalry is waiting for them at Agincourt. They are spoiling for a fight. And they are confident of winning. Henry's men are exhausted and very apprehensive.
He has to say something to them, he needs to motivate them, revive their spirits and give them the confidence they need to get the job done. He overhears a remark - The Earl of Westmoreland, one of his generals, says that he wishes they had more men from England. This is Henry's cue and he speaks to his men.
" Wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honor.
As one man more methinks would share from me .
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!".
