Affirmative Action

" By signing this order, President Johnson created what some now call "reverse discrimination." .
Affirmative action was created with efforts to aid minorities and women leap the discriminative barriers that were still presented even after the bill was enacted in 1965. At this time, the United States was in the wake of a nationwide civil-rights demonstrations; the racial tension was at an all time high. Over eighty percent of the nations corporate executive and managerial positions were occupied by the "white male," the same character whom controlled the hiring and firing of employees among these companies. This discrimination went on for so long, until 1965, when the nation decided it was time that these employers stop discriminating against minorities. Affirmative action was just the way the government believed they would repay minorities for all those years of suffering they were forced to endure under the high powered "white male." This all seemed to be a step in the right direction. However, then tension grew and ideas developed. .
Affirmative action was organized with good intentions, however quickly many groups organized to protest affirmative action. Despite affirmative actions greatness there are intense debates. Affirmative action was ended by the foe of affirmative action, Ward Connerly. Connerly honestly believed that affirmative action was causing racism that is why he wrote proposition 209. Proposition 209 had a large impact on California. .
The text proposition says that the proposition "Prohibits the state, local governments, districts, public universities, colleges, and schools, and other government instrumentalities from discriminating against or giving preferential treatment to any individual or group in public employment, public education, or public contracting on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin." (Text Proposition 209).
