At one part David says, "This had happened simply because the baby was just a bit different in some way from other babies"(75). One more point is that he does not agree with The Definition of Man. When he had read this over, David had said, "The ways of the world were very puzzling ."(14). This shows that David does not follow the beliefs of his parents and society. .
Secondly, there are more Children like David, in fact, there are 9 all together. The others are Rosalind, Rachel, Michael, Mark, Sally, Catherine, Anne, and the newest member Petra. All together, they use their telepathic abilities to withstand this Utopian environment that they seem to live in and dream of a better world where there is kindness, love, and equality. It so happens when they were found out, they had to run away from their world. With all of their high hopes and dreams of finding a better place, they do no give their selves in. This would be proven when Michael had said, "Knowing makes all the difference. Knowing that we"re not just pointless freaks - a few bewildered deviations hoping to save their own skins. It's the difference between just trying to keep alive, and having something to live for"(198). Another reason is because at the beginning of the book, David is telling the reader of what the perfect world would be. He had said, "Most often, I would see this wonderful place by daylight, but occasionally it was by night when the lights lay like strings of glow-worms along the shore, and a few of them seemed to be sparks drifting on the water, or in the air"(1). The last point is after David talks to Michael about what happens when they get caught, and Michael had said that David would have to kill Rosalind and Petra. Here, it clearly states David not giving up when he puts his arm around Petra and says, "Hush, darling. It isn't going to happen, because we aren't going to let them catch us"(144). This shows that they all dream of a better world where there is kindness, love, and equality.
