Smoking

Cigarette smoke can be just as dangerous to non-smokers as it can be to people who choose to smoke. Secondhand smoke contains numerous human carcinogens for which there is no safe level of exposure. .
Environmental Tobacco Smoke [ETS], or secondhand smoke, is the third leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the U.S.; the first is active smoking, the second is alcohol use. ETS is killing approximately 53,000 nonsmokers in the U.S. each year. Both active smoking and alcohol abuse require a willing participant. This in my opinion is what makes the major difference between the leading three causes of preventable deaths. I do not ask or volunteer to be exposed to secondhand smoke. The problem however is that due to the lack of laws and peoples rights I am therefore exposed to this deadly carcinogen on a daily basis.
What makes secondhand smoke or ETS so harmful and why should we be so concerned? Secondhand tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds. More than 60 of these are known or suspected to cause cancer. Yearly there are about 3,000 lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking adults. With cancer being so prevalent in this day and age ETS just adds to the worries of another possible way to develop this deadly disease. Why should non-smokers have to worry about just breathing the air around them?.
Secondhand smoke can be harmful in many other ways as well. Each year in the United States it is responsible for an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 deaths from heart disease in people who are not current smokers .
Other respiratory problems in nonsmokers include coughing, phlegm, chest discomfort, and reduced lung function.
Exposure to secondhand smoke can be extremely harmful to children as well. The developing lungs of young children are severely affected by exposure to secondhand smoke for several reasons including that children are still developing physically, have higher breathing rates than adults, and have little control over their indoor environments.
