Verdi

Verdi's La Traviata is a tragic story of a woman, Violetta, and her lover, Alfredo. Act I opens on a party that Violetta is having to reintroduce herself to society after a long battle with illness. It is at this party that Violetta is introduced to Alfredo, who professes his undying love for her. The act ends with Violetta, although she feels that Alfredo is a man that she could genuinely love, but deciding that she wants freedom instead.
Act II, Scene I takes place a few months later. Violetta has given up her "freedom" and is living contentedly in her country house with Alfredo. When the maid, Annina, informs Alfredo that in order to keep the house, Violetta has been selling her jewels, Alfredo rushes off to Paris to make money. In his absence, Giorgio Germont, Alfredo's father, shows up and demands that she leave Alfredo, because the news of their affair has seemingly threatened the engagement of Alfredo's sister. Because she leaves him, Alfredo comes to the conclusion that Violetta has left him for another man, and he plans to confront her at a party that evening.
Act II, Scene 2 takes place at Flora's party. Violetta arrives with Baron Douphol. Alfredo arrives, embittered about love and begins gambling at cards. When Douphol challenges Alfredo to a game of cards, he loses a small fortune to him. Violetta then takes Alfredo aside to try to get him to leave because she is fearful of the Baron's anger. However, Alfredo gets angry and makes her admit to loving Douphol, which crushes Alfredo. He denounces her and throws his gambling winnings at her feet. At this, Douphol challenges him to a duel.
Act III opens on Violetta's bedroom several months later. She is once again ill, and the doctor tells Annina that Violetta does not have long to live. In her deathbed, Violetta reads a letter from Germont that says the Baron was only wounded in his duel with Alfredo, who has been informed of the whole situation and is on his way to be with her.
