Step Up and Be a Man (or woman)

So, why is it so hard for men to step up and be men? Do women force them to come down, or do they just not want to take the responsibility anymore? Some may say that men in this society have become very lazy, and no longer want the traditional gender roles assigned to them. Some men just do not want to be men, and some women just do not want to be women. "The whole idea of manhood in America is pitiful, in my opinion.this version of masculinity is a little like having to wear an ill-fitting coat for one's entire life" (Theroux 430). Why does Theroux feel this way? Later, he tries to blame it on the way that boys are raised to always have to have a pretty girl, and to do that, they must be involved in sports and be the stud muffin of the school. Theroux even insults highschool sports coaches and professional athletes by saying that they are "pathetic oafs". "There is no book-hater like a Little League coach" (Theroux 431). Is this really the reason he feels this way, or is he just making an excuse for the way he feels? Does Theroux actually believe that the only reason that there are little league sports is to make young boys into something that they do not want to be? One would find it hard to believe that no little boy has ever wanted to play sports, and that all sports are just a conspiracy to make boys into men. Do most men feel the way that Theroux does? Does this society raise our boys to be the men that they do not want to be? If sports are a cause of men not enjoying being men, then why are major league sports so popular now? .
Sometimes, men and women break the mold and go against the stereotype of their gender. Some women become ministers or want to become president, going against what is typical. This has caused great controversy in the world. Now, it is not doubted that a woman can do a job like that just as good as a man can, but there is not very much evidence to prove it yet.
