This illustrates Howard's cold lack of concern for Willy's situation. Those changes represent the conflicts between the old and new order that are unfamiliar to Willy due to the traditional values on which he was brought up. Third, another conflict is his dreams of success. Throughout the play Willy's flashbacks show his pursuit for success. Willy's persistent chase for success not only affects his sense of his own worth but also ruins his sons' lives. For example, Biff and Happy have always been shown that a business career is the only way to achieve success. Therefore, Willy devoted his entire life to be successful, by believing that success can be measured in material terms, and a man is not valued for what he is, but for what he owns. Willy's effect on his son is shown when Biff asks Happy "You're a success, aren't you? Are you content?" Happy replies: " Hell no!" And he tells Biff that he is a lonely man. Happy, by taking Willy's course of life, is neither happy nor successful. .
Second, the main conflict in "Death of a Salesman" exists between Biff and his father. Willy has many disagreements with Biff about what becomes of him. Moreover, Willy thinks of Biff as untrustworthy and up to no good as a result, Willy is very angry and pressures Biff to become more successful. To emphasize and explain their conflict, three of Willy's conflicts with Biff are here by presented: First, the conflict between Biff and Willy begins at their meeting in Boston. For example, When Biff arrives to New England to get help from Willy with his teacher, Biff sees his father, the man he idolized, with another woman. To Biff, Willy was a hero, and after this scene Biff loses all respect for his father. Therefore when Biff returns home, he burns his University of Virginia shoes, which represent all of his hopes and dreams. Second, Biff loses faith in his father's dreams although he admires him. For example, Biff realizes that Willy is a dreamer, shouting "You fake! You phoney little fake! You fake!" Biff believed in his father's values for his entire life and only to find them as fake.
