Andrew Johnson was born in 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was elected to office from Tennessee just like Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, other North Carolina born presidents. He was a native from the South. But was a supporter of the Union. He served as a military governor of Tennessee during the Civil War. And finally was vice-president under the second term of Abraham Lincoln. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated Johnson was left with the pressure of restoring the nation after the ravages of the civil war. .
He grew up in a small wooden house in Raleigh. His dad Jacob Johnson, and his mom, Mary Johnson, both worked hard to maintain the home by working for Casso's Inn, which was a popular inn and stable. There house was on the property of that inn. His mother was a weaver for the Casso's Inn, and his father Jacob was the inn's hostler and the janitor for the State Capitol. Andrew was the younger brother out of the two sons in the Johnson family. In 1812 Jacob Johnson saved two of his friends from drowning. But died in 1812 from over-exertion. This left Mary to raise Andrew and his older brother William. Mary Johnson apprenticed Andrew and William to a tailor in Raleigh when Andrew was fourteen years old. .
Andrew had never been to school in his life. The only education he had while growing up was when he was serving as an apprentice. Usual customers would read books of religion to Johnson while he worked and then they would occasionally give him the books. Andrew taught himself to read. A couple years after starting his apprenticeship, him and his friends threw some rocks as a tradesman's house just to see what would happen. The resident of the home threatened to call the cops, so Johnson left the town and deserted his apprentice job at the tailor shop. He then moved to Carthage, North Carolina, which is sixty miles away from Raleigh. He found a job there with his tailoring skills but moved to Laurens, South Carolina so he would be even farther away from Raleigh.
