Disrespect

When I found out that I was going to write a paper on my family and our culture, it never struck me that I would be looking into their past. Never before have I pondered their past, nor even ask about how they got here. All I knew was that they grew up having a difficult time learning the American ways and adjusting to them. At first I was afraid to even ask, so I called my sisters and asked them about my parents past. They knew nothing, and so then I knew I was going to have to go in head first. My parents are not big talkers, and even worse they do not like talking about their past. When I asked they kept calling me, Metiche, which means nosy, but I insisted. Eventually, I was able to scrape some of it out, and this is what I got.
When I began to interview my father I knew it would be hard for him at times. He is a man who never shows any emotions, but once you have him open he is like the most emotional man you can ever meet. A tear shed his eye when I asked about his father. He would quickly ask my mother to see if she knew the answers to questions that I would ask about his childhood, but of course she didn't. My father does not remember his father at all. All he is aware of is his name. .
It all started on May 9, 1950, when Elpidio Ramos was born to Ezekiel and Ambrosia Ramos. He was the youngest of nine siblings. When my father reached the age of twenty-two he decided to better his life and come to the United States. When I asked my father how he came here, he hesitated and all of a sudden he's feelings of enthusiasm went straight to shame. My mother answered for him and said, por el tren, by train. So I then laughed and asked how much tickets were going for back then, once again my mother called me metiche. I still did not understand, it took a few minutes for my father to strongly state that he came illegally. It sort of shocked me because I am a person who does not agree with people being here illegally.
