Japanese Militarism

This lead to a disenfranchisement with the parliamentary government who the military felt had capitulated to the western powers in treaties and by stopping its colonial expansion during the nineteen twenties. Once Japan commenced on the path of militarism it found that because of its technological edge it could defeat other Asian powers this increased Japan's sense of superiority and feed the fires of nationalism. These fires grew as following the 1931 Manchurian incident Japan invaded Manchuria then most China. In South East Asia Japan quickly expanded breaking up British, Portuguese, and Dutch colonialism. Japanese militarism occurred not by an organized plan but rather through passive acceptance by the Japanese public. A compliant Japanese public coupled with an independent army were two factors that pushed Japan toward militarism in the 1930's.
So the army played a very important role in the rocky path that Japan followed towards militarism. The two main players in this vital struggle for power of the military and thus Japan as a whole were the Koda-ha which translates roughly into the Imperial Way faction and the Tosei-ha which means that Control Faction. Firstly we will begin with the Koda-ha. .
The Koda-ha was most definitely the more radical of the two factions and attracted many young officers who believed in state socialism administered by a military dictatorship. The members of the Koda-ha were not prepared to go so far as to stage a coup-d"etat, however they did believe that a war against the Soviet Union was inevitable and they believed that the conquest of Manchuria was the essential first step in their plan for expansion. So any move south into china was not favored by the members of the Koda-ha.
Now the Tosei-ha, well the Tosei-ha were the more conservative of the two factions however they still housed ultra-nationalist elements. The members of the Tosei-ha did not believe in direct actions against the government or the use of terrorist methods.
