See this house? This house was built by your great great grandfather. That's my mother's father. It took him three years to build this house. While he was building it his wife to be lived 100 miles away with his parents. He slaved over this house and wanted it to be perfect. This is where they started their lives together. He wouldn't marry my grandmother until this house was built. When he finally finished it he brought her to the front steps and asked her to be his wife. They were married here and all 4 of their children in this house. Since then, many members of our family have lived here, grown here, laughed here, cried here, and died here. If ever you question who you are, come here, think here, stay here, and you will find yourself.
When I was 16 years old I had a huge fight with my parents. Well, really it was a fight with my father. He wanted me to work more hours at my after school job and cut back on my extracurricular activities. I wanted to get more involved in my activities and cut back on work. He told me that I would never make it through life if I didn't have good work ethic. After we both stormed off I decided to go stay the weekend with my grandparents. So I drove up north, two and a half hours, to stay with them. My Grandma asked me why I had fought with my father and after I finished my story she told me this story about the house. I'm now 6 years older and to this day, if I ever question who I am, where I came from, or where I am going, I drive up to Frankfort and stay at our house. The same house my great great grandfather built.
Creation stories are a very important part of the Native American culture. These stories tell different tribes where they came from. They give a culture their identity and purpose. Creation stories offer explanation and direction for the people of a tribe.
