Stressors in Life

The topic of class discussion thus far was stress. So, for the past week, I have been thinking about stress, and what causes it. We discussed the definition of stress as it pertains to psychology. It is a physical or psychological stimulus which, impinging upon an individual, produces strain or disequilibria. We also discussed things that are stressors. Some stressors can be big like a death in the family, or small like a train or bus being late. Either way, the more I thought about it over the past week, the more I realized how big a part of my life stress is.
There will never be a part of life that will be stress free. The things that people find joy in can cause as much, if not more stress than the things we hate. I think it is safe to say that going to the doctor or dentist will generally cause everybody stress. They are normally unpleasant. But why does a wedding, something associated with joy, also cause large amounts of stress? Do we as people put too much pressure on ourselves and cause unwarranted stress, or is stress just a part of the day? My train was late the other day, and I found myself really upset. I knew that I was going to be able to get top class on time, but the change in plans made me uneasy. It was the same feeling I had every time a new year started with school. By the second week, I was ok. Though. It was almost as if I created the stress out of habit. I was so used to being nervous about starting a new grade, that when I got older, it stayed with me. Even in high school, when I had a lot of friends and things to look forward to, the stress of anew year was still prevalent. I had learned to be stressed.
The woman we watched in the video was able to establish that there are coping behaviors for dealing with stress. Her coping behavior was humor. I was able to relate to this. I find myself using the same mechanism to deal with my everyday stressors like she did. It allows me to step back, and reevaluate the stressor to see if it is something to get worked up over or not.
