Luster Analysis

A good education is the key to success. This statement hits home for Luster Sexton in Jesse Stuart's short story "Split Cherry Tree". He is a stern believer in working hard for what you want. In Luster's case he wants only the best for his son. Luster is a hardworking father who wants his son Dave to be successful in his future.
Luster is certain that the best way for Dave to be successful is for him to have a proper education. For example, he is constantly telling Dave how he's "tryin" to send [him] to school [to] make a better livin' than [he] has made"(2). Luster is proud of the work he has done to provide for his family, but he knows that Dave is not destined for farming in the hills. It isn't his wish for Dave to make a future in the hills, but instead to get out into the world and make something of himself. Furthermore, Luster has chosen Dave from his other children to "make a scholar he's the only one out's eleven youngin's I've sent to high school"(3). He is giving Dave the chance his other children did not have. Not only for Dave's sake does Luster want Dave's future to be successful, but for the sake of the family name. Luster treats Dave's future as the most valuable thing he has because in his eyes it is.
He may seem intimidating or even threatening at a first acquaintance, however, Luster's appearance does not reveal the compassion and ideals he holds. To demonstrate, he takes a stand in the defense for animals on the farm saying to Dave how "man can defend hisself [animals] can't right kind o" heart"(4). Luster is trying to be the kind of person who, by his standards, is not a coward. His heart is big and he knows the difference between right and wrong. Eventually, Luster grasps the reason Dave has to work for the money his teacher loaned him, and he wants Dave to understand " he's a good man-(5). Luster realizes Dave's teacher has not been in the wrong for making Dave work.
