Compairing the Articles of cofederation and the Constitution

We have learned that the United States has operated under two constitutions. These two documents have a lot in common with each other. The first document was The Articles of Confederation started in March of 1781, which was replaced by The Constitution in June of 1788. They were established by the same people. Even thought they resemble each other, we can see that they different than first thought once you look into both documents closely. In this essay we will see what the farmers found important in 1781, and what they thought needed to be ratified by 1788.
The Articles of Confederation have been known to be called "The Articles of Confusion". This document linked together thirteen states for joint action dealing with common problems, to include foreign affairs. Though this first stage of government was to be shaky, with no executive branch, and the judicial arm being left up to the states. Each state would have only one vote on any issues that would come up for a vote, meaning that they would all have the same voice on the matter essentially. Having just taken control of taxation and commerce from Britain, these suspicious states were not about to yield there new privileges to an American parliament. However the new congress had no power to regulate commerce, allowing the states free to establish different laws regarding tariffs and navigation. Nor could the congress enforce its tax collecting program. The Articles of Confederation were proved to be a land mark in government. Thomas Jefferson enthusiastically hailed the new structure as the best one" existing or that ever did exist". He also said "to compare it with the European governments, was like comparing Heaven to Hell". Although this seemed to working at the time, there were too many things that were in need of change to give the government a stronger hold on things that would arise. So six years after the Articles of Confederation were written, there would come a change known as the Constitution of the United States of America.
