Augustus- Augustus is a former Texas Ranger who is a reluctant rancher. He is a romantic and has a way with the women. He especially loves Lorena. He never wants to work but he loves to talk.
Call- Call is a former Texas Ranger who is driven, demanding, and has no patience for weakness. He is obsessed with the dream of creating his own empire. His son is Newt but he won't admit it because he is ashamed that his mom was a hooker.
Lorena- Lorena is a sporting women or prostitute whom Gus has loved for a long time. She stole everyone's heart with her caring ways.
Newt- Newt is Call's son but Call won't admit it. Newt was born to a hooker and he doesn't know that he is working right beside his father.
Deets- Deets is a black man that has been friends with Gus and Call for a long time or since they were fighting off the Indians. Now Deets works on the ranch with them as a helping hand but he becomes important as a tracker.
Jake-Jake is a former ranger also, who are friends with Augustus and Call. He comes to Lonesome Dove because he is evading the law. He had just killed a man in Arkansas by accident, who just happens to be the sheriff's brother. He is the one who comes up with the idea to drive cattle north into Montana.
Dish- Dish is a young kid from Lonesome Dove who just happens to like Lorena, (like everyone else), but she will not have "business arrangements- with him because of his age.
Wilbarger- Wilbarger is an educated man because he knows Latin. He comes to Augustus to try to buy 40 horses to replace his that were stolen and he needs them to drive his cattle north.
Chick- Chick works for Wilbarger.
