Throughout history abortion has been one of the main topics of controversy. Groups of people choose to become Prolife or Prochoice, one group choosing the right to life the other the right to choose. I believe life is a gift, and as human beings we must cherish it. I am Prochoice because abortion is a legalized form of murder, it is physically and emotionally harmful to the mother, and there are many alternatives to abortion. .
"The Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton supreme court decisions legalized abortion in all fifty states, during all nine months of pregnancy for any reason, medical social, or otherwise in the year 1973."(Beckwith) Before these decisions were made, many believed abortion was a horrible act of murder. Susan B. Anthony labeled it "child murder". The present is no different than the past; many still believe abortion is a form of murder. After the Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton decision one question seemed to remain, when does human life begin? In April of 1981 a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee held hearings to answer this very question. Appearing to speak on behalf of the scientific community was a group of internationally known geneticists and biologists whom found life to begin at conception. Dr Hymie Gordon, Chairman, Department of Genetics at The Mayo Clinic, added, "By all the criteria of modern molecular biology life is present from the moment of conception."(Roe vs. Wade) Surgical abortions are usually not performed before seven weeks. By this time the baby's heart has already begun to beat, the baby has identifiable arms and legs. The baby also displays measurable brain waves.(Moore) .
Abortion has become the accepted way of dealing with unplanned pregnancies. The mother or father feel the conceived child will become an abrupt inconvenience to their busy prominent lives. Not only do they disregard the life of the child, many disregard the life of the mother as well.
