The spread of Christianity in Roman Mesopotamia.

References to eating food offered to idols usually refer to sacrifices offered by mercantile guilds to their gods; food which were shared among the members. The powerful commercial lifeline of the Roman empire served to bring Christianity to the farthest parts of the known world. But just as many traders believed in Christianity, there were also many against it. The Book of Revelations 18:9-20 prophesied the downfall of this economic world. The spread of Christianity eventually moved away from traders to full-time missionaries.
One of the major contributions to the spread of Christianity to Roman Mesopotamia is the network of roads manned by the Roman empire. The Via Maris which stretched from Egypt through Palestine branched out to the East in the Galilee region toward Damascus; and another branched north, passing through Asia Minor eventually to join the Via Egnatia into Europe. Likewise the King's Highway branched from the Via Maris through the Negev desert to the eastern shore of the Dead Sea and the Jordan River, through to Damascus. These two very ancient trade routes were the major arteries for the movement of troops and merchants between the African, Asian and European continents; passing through Palestine to the cities in Mesopotamia. It is unlikely that Christians would have wandered away from these well-worn routes in Roman times, to cross the uncharted deserts to Mesopotamia whether to spread their faith or to trade.
These ancient trade routes had provided shelter and food for the traveler and the beasts of burden in the villages the routes traversed. It also provided companionship among travelers who might have shared their Christian faith. Through this region, the ancient trade routes also overlapped, or crossed new highways built by the Romans.
This network of new roads were maintained and protected; even expanded because they formed the lifeline of the empire in the east.
