Australia's Alignment With the USA in the War Against Iraq

Certainly, our defense budget does not allow for a substantial commitment. I feel it highly unlikely that conscripted troops would be used.
The crux of my argument is that we should not enter into a war with Iraq unless the UN supports this move. There are probably a number of ways we can support the US stand without actually committing troops to the gulf. In terms of trade the Americans do not support Australia when they subsidized their beef and wheat industry. On the other hand Iraq is a major buyer of Australian wheat. People would argue that we need and American presence in the Indian Ocean in case of a terrorist attack or there is unrest in the region.
The question of economic aid to third world countries by the United States is paramount in terms of votes on the United Nations Security Council. On the program Four Corners on the ABC on the tenth of March highlighted the number of countries who would be almost forced to vote in favour of the US because of their dependence on economic aid packages. Countries like Mexico, Guinea, Columbia, Pakistan, Cameroon and Angola rely heavily on this aid in order to function successfully. At this point in time (12th March) France and Russia intend to use their veto. The person who has the most to lose in this situation is Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of Britain. His government has indicated they will vote him out of office if he commits Britain to a war that is not sanctioned by the UN. It appears that either Saddaam Hussein has to back down or Tony Blair. The general public has indicated the unwillingness to participate in this war, yet George Bush, John Howard and Tony Blair have committed their governments to pursuing Saddaam Hussein and in the case of Britain and Australia a number of troops to the gulf. Turkey has opened their boarder to allow US troops and tanks to shortcut to Iraq. As a reward Turkey is given a billion dollar package in aid.
