Two Men with a Wardrobe

The short film, Two Men with a Wardrobe, directed by Roman Polanski, has two of the strangest characters I have ever seen on screen. Walking out of the sea, they carry with them what the title of the film suggests, a wardrobe, otherwise known as a closet dresser. From the very beginning they meet opposition while trying to fit into the strange world around them, soon finding out that complying with the strange customs of the new land is a much more difficult task than originally thought. Throughout the film they do not fit in, until finally they give up head back to their homeland. These characters act as a symbol to anyone who has ever tried to fit into a new surrounding, and to those whom society rejects.
Right from the get-go, the viewer witnesses a very strange sight for anyone to behold: Two men walking out of the sea, with a wardrobe no less. This journey from the sea represents their yearning to try and fit into a new and perhaps exciting environment. Upon reaching the beach, they begin to goof around and play, like little kids, making the viewer even more astounded. One gets the feeling that they have a very close friendship, perhaps they are even brothers, due to their over friendly nature toward one another. Polanski chose two great actors for the part because not only do they look the oddball type from a strange land (i.e. the clothes, hats, mannerisms, etc), but they have no problems acting the part either. They give a great performance in my opinion that would be hard to reproduce today.
Once the friends leave the beach, they try to partake in the workings of the city such as riding the trolley, eating in a café, and getting a hotel. All of their attempts however are met with anger or minor hostility. Trying to get on the trolley they are shoved back from it because the other riders do not want their huge wardrobe onboard, crowding everyone. At the café they are forced out by the manager, meeting the same fate at the hotel as well.
