The painting that I chose to reinterpret was Matthias Grunewald's, " The Crucifixion.
This painting was painted during the Gothic period. The medium of this painting was oil on .
wood. The content of the original painting is for Matthias to show the aim of all religious art .
during this time period and proclaiming the sacred truths as taught by the church. The central .
panel of the painting shows that he sacrificed all other considerations to this one overriding aim. .
Grunewald left nothing undone to bring home to us the horrors of this scene of suffering: Christ's .
dying body is distorted by the torture of the cross. The Man of Sorrows speaks to us of the meaning of His Calvary. His suffering is reflected in the way that St. Mary Magdelene, wrings her hands in sorrow. On the other side of the Cross, stands the figure of St. John the Baptist. The new meaning of the painting in which I reinterpreted is the fact that religion is too commercialized. The background I chose was an audience. This represents the fact that people sit back and watch as religion is being more and more commercialized. Jesus is on a cross of televisions to show that his death is too commercialized. The picture of the model in the bikini is to basically galvanize the audiences" attention and to make the parallel that in some respects, I think religious figures have dedicated their lives to making a profit off of religion. Every time you walk into a store you see the letters W.W.J.D. on many items for sale. Jesus never wanted to make money off of his religion, he just wanted to help others. Another example of how church is too commercialized would have to do with the church itself, demanding the congregation to make donations. Religion does not need to be a structure for function. Religion can be done on the sidewalk, or wherever, like it was conducted in the days of Jesus himself. The sitcom stars represent people that help commercialize religion to the audience.
