             When connecting your computer to the Internet, you do not connect directly to the backbone; you instead connect to an ISP that in turn connects to the backbone. The most common way of accessing the Internet from a person's home uses a hardware device called a modem along with a phone line to establish a temporary Internet connection commonly referred to as a dial-up connection. . Your computer connects via modem over a regular old phone line to the ISP's computer, which in turn connects to the Internet backbone with a high-speed link and then routes data between your computer and the Internet backbone. The larger ISPs in the market have their own high-speed leased lines which enables them to provide better service to their customers because they are not completely dependent and at the mercy of the telecommunication providers. .
             Some of the largest national and regional ISPs include AT&T WorldNet; .
             IBM; Global Network; MCI; Netcom; UUNet; and PSINet. ISPs also include thousands of small companies providing local service. Most of the larger ISPs interconnect with each other through MAE (ISP switching centers run by MCI WorldCom) or similar centers.
