Citizen Kane - Picnic

The long black cars used, and also the number seemingly endless current of cars from the bottom of the shot highlights the funeral procession theme. It also makes the mind wonder about what might happen at the picnic. The trumpets provide a continuous melody showing no variance until a haunting version of "It can't be love" opens the next scene.
A dissolve from the shot of the cars to a close up of the face of the singer in the third shot draws attention to the lyrics "this can't be love, because there is no true love". The opening lyrics of this song serve the purpose of reminding the audience of the strain between Kane and Susan. It also reflects on the information we are given about Kane, and his way of showing love. In this scene, the mise-en-scene is used to direct the view of the audience. The butler from Xanadu, Raymond, is seen and his black suit stands out from the crowd as the camera pans left in deep focus of the festivities making the viewer aware of the space. The butler leads us to Kane, as he always has in the film and the obvious decadence is shown by the roasting pork and the large tents seen amongst, what is believed to be the everglades. The largest of these tents is spotted and its open canopy beckons us to investigate. Our view of the everglades is ended with a dissolve into the tent. The bickering couple is seen and it is here that a more traditional shot/reverse shot directing and editing style is used. .
The action and dialogue inside of the tent becomes a series of shot/reverse shot of either Kane or Susan. The camera cuts according to the shifting of the dramatic centre of gravity, choosing for us what we see at the moment when it must been seen. Many times the arguing voice of Susan's is shown with the reaction of Kane's and vice versa, these reaction shots are important in piecing together the ongoing argument between the couple. Here we find a tired, aging and overweight Kane slouching in a chair.
