Friar Lawrence's Letter of Resignation

I feel that I must write this letter, as I can no longer continue to live with how I have betrayed the priesthood. I have taken the trust of two young adults in their quest for love and in doing so both have met with an untimely end. .
It all started the morning Romeo Montague came to see me, in fact by the look of him on that morning it didn't look as if he had seen his bed that night at all. He started to ask about performing a marriage ceremony because he had fallen in love with Juliet Capulet. At first I didn't know what to say, Romeo had only spoken previously about a young lady called Rosaline. This sudden change of heart alarmed me greatly. I have written to you before about the feud between these two families and because of this I had my reservations about the match. On the other hand this union might turn this feud from hatred of one another into pure love and happiness for their children. This fighting between these families has been going on for far too long.
If I had only been able to see the consequences of this union before it was entered into. Now I can no longer fulfil my duties and so I must resign my position as Verona's priest. I cannot forgive myself or to come to terms with how many lives have been either changed or forfeit because of what has happened to these ill-advised youths. I do indeed believe that young Romeo and Juliet were in love, but unfortunately they were not the only ones that had to pay the price for that love. It wasn't until a few hours after the marriage that things started to go wrong. After the marriage Romeo went to meet his cousin, but Juliet's cousin Tybalt was waiting for him. Tybalt has always regarded Romeo as a hated enemy and so he challenged young Romeo. In the process of this fray Mercutio, a friend of Romeo and a kinsman to Escales was brutally killed. In anger Romeo chased Tybalt though the streets of Verona and in his haste he killed Tybalt in revenge.
