The Marcos Regime


He was only 32 years old. The people reelected him twice in the year 1953 and 1957. A political party called "Partido Liberal" recruited the young Congressman and was convinced by the members of the political party to run for office as a Senator in the year 1959. He swept the senatorial elections and was able to garner the most number of votes making him eligible of the position Minority Floor Leader. (Agoncillo, T.A., 1970, p. 563).
             With these political achievements, the Philippine nation awaited Ferdinand Marcos" run for presidency. To everyone's surprise, Marcos did not opt to be a candidate in the presidential elections. The reason behind this was he did not want to compete with his close friend, Diosdado Macapagal, who was then running for president. It was believed that Ferdinand Marcos wanted to run for president but then, decided to give way for the sake of his friend.
             He did speeches for Macapagal's campaign and was even his campaign manager. Eventually, Diosdado Macapagal won. .
             President Macapagal performed well on his job as leader of the country. He was liked by the Filipino people and gained the trust of the Philippine government. Realizing this, Marcos thought that his dream of becoming president was starting to get out of the picture. .
             The last days of the year 1963, it was noticeable that Marcos wanted to be separated from the Liberal party. Marcos had an intuition that Macapagal would run again for president. He then started to make issues that turn out to be against the Macapagal administration. Upon doing this, he was able to make his own reasons to protest against Macapagal. April 21, 1964, Marcos quitted as the president of the Liberal party and joined the opposing group, the "Nacionalistas." (Agoncillo, T.A., 1970, p. 563).
             Ferdinand Marcos once again tried to win the hearts of the Filipino people through his irresistible charisma. Sooner or later, he had a large number of loyalists.
