The relationship between Gene and Finny was a strong friendship but it had its ups and its down's. Finny is the one in the relationship who likes to play sports, have fun, and skip school. Gene is the one who is passive, introverted, and takes school serious. Finny, could get away with anything, even by his teachers. So Finny would always nag Gene into putting off his studying and schoolwork and go skip school and play sports with him. Gene hated when Finny did this but he never said anything or did anything about it. Mainly, I think, he did not do anything because he did not want to upset Finny and make himself look like a nerd and only be into book and work. Finny would usually tell Gene that he needed to take a break and have fun instead of studying all the time. So this persuaded Gene most of the time but he knew that he needed to study and later in the story Gene was beginning to get very aggravated when Finny did not let him study, then Gene failed a test. So Gene, being more emotional and taking school serious, began to think that Finny was pulling him away from his studies because Finny just didn't really care about how Gene felt toward school. Finny wanted to have fun and he did not care about Gene's feelings toward school because school was not important to him. Gene was really feeling ignored by Finny but he did not say anything. Until one day, Finny and Gene were skipping class and jumping from the tree into the river. They were in the tree, getting ready to jump, when Gene shook the limb and Finny lost his balance, then fell off, and hit the ground. He broke his leg very badly and Gene got one good thing and one bad thing out of doing this. The good thing was that he has to study and be more academically involved in school while Finny was away at home. The bad thing was that Gene did not really want to hurt Finny that badly and making him unable to play sports. Therefore, all of the boys at school gave Gene a hard time about it and all Gene wanted to do by making Finny fall was maybe Finny would realize that Gene didn't always want to stop studying and play sports with him.
