This also explains situations whenever there is a full moon, usually people would go ghost hunting' or it is a perfect night to share scary stories. Full moons make a nice effect on horror movies as well.
In Thessaly, Northern Greece, witches are considered mighty magicians, who can bring the moon to the surface of the earth, and suck up its powers for their own needs. Others are looked upon with fear, for there is a myth claiming that they can bring the dead back to life, and kill at a fleeting look (Kronzek, and Kronzek 255). The former was probably the reason why Anne Rice, author of the famous vampire chronicles, associated witches with vampires in her book Merrick, for vampires are defined as the "living dead " a resurrected corpse " or the ghost of a corpse that leaves its grave - (Guiley, "Ghosts- 393). The latter, on the other hand, is called the evil eye. I recently watched a program on the Discovery Channel about a tribe, which feared a man who can kill a person by looking directly at his eye. They believed that this ability was passed down by his father who uttered it to him in the form of a curse. Consequently, he was isolated a few miles away from their village to avoid deaths. On the other hand, he is also regarded with respect, being an excellent craftsman who makes their bodily adornments, like earrings, bracelets, anklets, and necklaces. .
Sorcery also includes the witch doctors, which even up to now are known in rural areas in traditional countries. In the Philippines, witch or quack doctors are very popular especially outside the urban areas. They are one of the causes of accidental deaths because people believe that these doctors, known as surjuano', can cure the sick. A classmate of mine died because of that. Her parents refused to go to the hospital because of the high expenses. The surjuano made them believe that an angry mangkukulam' (Filipino term for sorcerer) cursed her.
